Drivetrain and Powertrain – The Difference

Porsche powertrain and drivetrain

What’s the difference between drivetrain and powertrain? In short, the drivetrain is what gives the power to move the wheels and the powertrain is made up of the motor and the drivetrain.

Powertrain Versus Drivetrain

You might not know off the top of your head what the benefits are of contrasting a drivetrain vs. powertrain yet when you understand the differences between the two, it will give you the advantage when car purchasing, seeing the auto mechanic, or when Alex Trebek asks you a Jeopardy question concerning car components that make cars move.

In short, powertrains and drivetrains essentially do the exact same thing. They create kinetic energy to make your vehicle ‘go’. Now, chances are that you’ve never truly thought of exactly how important these moving parts are. They’re the unsung heroes that get you from point A to point B and they each operate in their own special method.

Drivetrain Components: What are they?

Often times the terms ‘drivetrain’ and ‘powertrain’ are used interchangeably but, contrary to popular belief, they are not the exact same. So exactly what is the difference between powertrain elements and drivetrain components? The greatest difference is the way power is created and distributed to the car.

A drivetrain is not really a single part of your car – it’s a group of drivetrain parts that collaborate with the engine to move the wheels and different parts of the car to move it into motion. These components often consist of the transmission, differential, driveshaft, axles, CV joints, and the wheels.

How Does A Drivetrain Work?

This is the order in which power is generated and delivered by a drivetrain:

  • The engine will produce power to power a flywheel
  • That flywheel works with the transmission to manage the amount of power distributed to various other components of the drivetrain
  • The driveshaft spins to create power to a differential
  • After that the differential delivers power from all those driveshaft parts and boom … your wheels are in motion

What is in A Powertrain?

If you mastered the drivetrain basics, the powertrain basics should be a simple idea to grasp, because of the fact that there is only one defining variable that sets them apart. That variable is the engine. In a powertrain, the engine belongs of the many moving parts. If you keep in mind from the paragraph above, the drivetrain collaborates with the engine.

The powertrain includes every moving part that is essential to the car’s success. Its sole function is transforming kinetic energy into propulsion motion. If one of these components fail your vehicle might experience some unusual rattling, or shaking.
