It wasn’t that long ago that the idea of Porsche making anything besides 2-door sports cars was thought to be heresy. Now the German car company has a 4-door sedan and two Sport Utility Vehicles and unbelievably Porsche survived the ‘crusade’ generated by the air-cooled perfectionists. The ’19 Porsche Cayenne is the 3rd generation of the initial Porsche SUV and it’s better than ever before. Today the 2019 Porsche Cayenne handles the 2019 BMW X5, the granddaddy of German luxury SUVs.
Neither the 2019 Cayenne to tell you that it’s a BMW.nor the ’19 BMW X5 is the remedy for uninspired, slow SUVs. The X5 has either a 3.0L TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder engine or a 4.4 L TwinPower Turbo V8 engine to choose from. The 6cyl. produces 335 horse power while the V8 makes 456hp, and while those numbers are impressive, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne is a lot more powerful. Offering 2 6-cylinders, a hybrid variation, and a V8, the Cayenne has something for everyone. Like the BMW, the base 6-cylinder engine makes 335 horsepower however the 4.0L TwinTurbocharged V8 on the Cayenne Turbo makes 541 horsepower! The Cayenne beats the X5 in power as a result of a more powerful engine and an available hybrid drivetrain.
Both the Porsche and the BMW lean on familial design. The X5 depends greatly on the twin-kidney grille to tell you that it’s a BMW. The Porsche Cayenne plays a similar trick with the head and taillight design, it’s very reminiscent of its Porsche brethren. Both SUVs are magnificent to look at and as athletic as the BMW looks, the Porsche looks just as daunting, yet in a sleeker trim.
Both vehicles are highly configured and engulf you in luxury. While the X5 has a full digital interface, the Cayenne opts for a mix of classic style and digital. The tachometer is analog, flanked by a digital screen on either side. It really is a good setup. A Heads-Up Display, Adaptive Cruise, Heated Steering Wheel, and Heated/Cooled seating are some of the features you’re able to get in either car. You can not go wrong with either SUV.
We aren’t nearly to the point of having self-driving automobiles, yet (we’re waiting, Elon!) but the tech that is now available in both cars is remarkable. Options like night vision and Lane Keeping Assist (with traffic sign recognition!) are just a couple of ways that the Cayenne works to keep you safe and secure. With attributes like optional Adaptive Cruise, Rear Parking Aid and optional All Wheel Steering, both of these vehicles are packed with modern technology.
The all-new 2019 X5 is a great vehicle, but the 2019 Cayenne is the better driver’s car of the two. Neither car is likely to see any off-road action, so it comes down to which of these mall crawlers does a better job as a ‘car’. Both cars are extremely nice, but the Cayenne is just more fun to drive. The Porsche wins this hotly contested matchup.
